Your Emerald City Ride registration fee supports local veterans nonprofit this Memorial Day weekend

If you haven't yet registered for the Emerald City Ride presented by Kaiser Permanente, now there's an added reason to commit to riding this Sunday, May 26. For every rider who registers from May 21 through May 26, Cascade will donate $5 to the local branch of The Mission Continues. The Mission Continues is a national nonpartisan nonprofit that empowers veterans to continue their service while empowering communities with veteran talent, skills and preparedness to generate visible impact.

Representatives from The Mission Continues will be on route this Sunday, greeting and assisting riders as they make their way through the SR 99 Tunnel, just one highlight of the 12-mile route. Rebecca Sorensen, Cascade’s events and rides community director, is thrilled to see the supportive relationship take shape. “We’re excited to have The Mission Continues’ presence and support at the Emerald City Ride this weekend,” says Sorensen. “Given the timing of the ride during Memorial Day weekend, we thought it was even more important to support their efforts to give thanks and remember what this holiday is really about.”

Following models laid out by rides like the annual Seattle to Portland (STP), The Emerald City Ride is the latest in Cascade’s efforts to build deeper relationships with communities through which we ride. For organizations like The Mission Continues, that also means more broadly highlighting the profound impact that veterans have on the communities where they live and work.

Linh Thai, city impact manager for the The Mission Continues’ Pacific Northwest branch, says "The Mission Continues is proud to connect and empower our veterans to continue to serve in under-resourced communities across the country. Together, we are making collective impacts and continuing to build collaborations to maximize our efforts and resources.” Thai explains that veterans are doing critical work in communities across the city every day. “Here in Seattle, the 1st and 2nd Service Platoons are faithfully serving the Rainier Beach Community and International District/Chinatown,” she says. “We are grateful to have strong partners like Cascade Bicycle Club as we continue to find creative solutions to make our city a more livable and environmentally sustainable for all.”

If you’re looking for a fun and meaningful way to celebrate Memorial Day weekend, the Emerald City Ride has you covered. The weather is looking great, and you’ll be sure to catch incredible views from the I-5 express lanes and Aurora Bridge. If you missed the Tunnel Ride back in February, you can also catch up on your chance to roll through the brand new SR 99 Tunnel.

Registration for the Emerald City Ride closes Wednesday, May 22 at 11:59 p.m. In-person registration will be available at the Cascade Bicycle Club headquarters during packet pick-up hours (May 23-24, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.), as well as at the ride start line. An additional fee will be charged at both locations.

As we ride this Memorial Day weekend, we maintain full and somber awareness that our freedom to do so is made possible because of the women and men who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Please consider joining us in this common purpose, and we look forward to riding with you on May 26!
