Major improvements (and detours) coming to the Burke-Gilman Trail

Riders who take the Burke-Gilman Trail past the University of Washington may have noticed some new signage and barricades popping up along the route. Rejoice, U-dub commuters, for some major improvements are coming to the Burke-Gilman!

As part of the Montlake Triangle Project (MTP), the University of Washington has begun creating the “Rainier Vista Land Bridge” at the intersection of Pacific Street and Montlake Boulevard, connecting the Montlake Triangle to Rainier Vista.

This project will create a seamless experience for both walkers and cyclists on the Burke-Gilman Trail and those walking from campus to Husky Stadium.

To build the land bridge across the Burke-Gilman Trail, trail users will be detoured around the lower Rainier Vista cut (see map below). The detour is expected to last 18 months. 

This project is part of the overall campus master plan to transform and activate the area. We expect additional improvements to be made to the Burke-Gilman Trail from 15th Avenue NE to the Montlake Triangle starting in March and finishing in October. Additional detours for this trail improvement have yet to be announced, but we’ll keep you posted.
