UW intersection reverts to two-way stop

Heads up, Burke-Gilman Trail users: the intersection of the Burke-Gilman Trail and Pend Oreille Road is reverting to its former state over the weekend.

The intersection's four-way stop treatment was short-lived, and after observation of the intersection, University of Washington has decided to remove the stop signs on Pend Oreille where it intersects the Burke-Gilman Trail.

Trail users will still have stop signs; road users on Pend Oreille will not have stop signs.

UW Transportation Services cited long motor vehicle queues, backed up to 25th Ave NE as the primary reason for the change.

"We are heading back to the drawing board with the city," said Josh Kavanagh, UW Transportation director.

UW Transportation's long-term goal, Kavanagh said, is to determine how this intersection can work better with trail.

Finding a permanent solution may just be a matter of funding. UW states they will seek funding in the regional mobility grant competition, which would allow UW to grade separate the intersection.
