Final Westlake Protected Bike Lane design to be released in a month; public gets behind project in Cascade video

The Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is finalizing its design work for the Westlake Protected Bike Lane to be presented at a public open house on Wednesday, Oct. 22.

The Westlake Protected Bike Lane will provide a seemless, comfortable bicycle connection from Fremont to South Lake Union, while adding clarification and predictability for all road users. Similar to the recently-installed infrastructure on Second Avenue, a protected bike lane uses curbs, planters, posts, etc., to physically separate people riding bikes from motorized traffic.

The alignment of the protected bike lane will be along the east edge of the Westlake Corridor parking lot, mostly through the existing service lane.

The public is voicing its support for this project in a new video released by Cascade Bicycle Club. In this video, dozens of people of all ages and riding styles are shown expressing their support of the Westlake Protected Bike Lane. Click here to watch the video >>>

Cascade is sharing this video not only to drum up more support for the project, but to thank Mayor Ed Murray for his work and support of this project. The video is part of Cascade Bicycle Club's "Connect Westlake" campaign, which is currently collecting 1,000 thank-you postcards for Mayor Murray.

"We want to make sure that Mayor Ed Murray knows how much we appreciate his leadership and support of the project," said Jeff Aken, Advocacy Director. "As we're seeing on Second Avenue, where ridership has tripled since installing the new protected bike lane, better bicycle infrastructure paired with city support makes for better, safer roads for all users."

Connect Westlake volunteers are out and about at farmers markets, along commute routes and at Cascade events to collect these post cards in-person. The bundle of cards will be delivered to Mayor Murray ahead of the October open house.
