Statement on the fatality in downtown Seattle

"We are extremely saddened by the news of another bicycling fatality in Seattle. Our hearts go out to her friends and family. While details of the incident are still emerging, the new Second Avenue protected bike lane -- opening on September 8 -- would have likely prevented this tragedy.

The new infrastructure features separate bike and motor vehicle signals, and when bicyclists have a green light, motor vehicles will not be allowed to turn left. Further more, the new bike lane will reduce conflicts and clarify every user's position on the roadway, thus making everyone more aware of their fellow road users.

With more infrastructure like the Second Avenue Protected Bike Lane, we hope to soon achieve zero traffic deaths and serious injuries in the Puget Sound region.

Along with the media and public, we will continue to learn more about what happened in the hours and days to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the bicyclist's friends, family and colleagues, as well as the driver."
